What is an err.log, and where can I find it?

The file err.log stores important status outputs of the Catan Online World client. Errors occurring during operation will also be specified there. Therefore, this error log ("err" / "log") often greatly helps the programmers to find out about program errors.
Depending on your operating system (Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X) there are different aspects to be noted.
Windows:
If you have installed the COW in the default folder, you will find the err.log file at
C:\Program Files\Catan GmbH\Catan Online Welt 2\
To access this folder, open the Windows Explorer via the Start Menu (Start / (All) Programms / Accessories) or by simultanously pressing Win-E (the Windows key on the lower left of your keyboard together with the letter E).
If the file extensions are hidden for known file types (standard setting), the file will be just be called "err" (without ".log").
Windows Vista:
The file will be continued every time you start the COW client. If you completely uninstall and then reinstall the COW client, an empty err.log file will be created in the above mentioned folder.
Windows 2000 or Windows XP:
If you use the regular COW client, the err.log will be continued every time you start this program, just like in Windows Vista.
However, instead of the regular COW client you can also start the program "CatanOnlineWelt-Debug" or "CatanOnlineWelt-Debug.bat" in the above mentioned folder. This way, a new, empty err.log will be generated. (Please note: This procedure will not work when you use Windows Vista.)
Linux
Unpacking the installation archive will create a folder named "COW-Client" with an empty err.log. It will be continued every time you start the regular COW starter script COWStarter.sh.
Instead of the regular COW client, you can also start the starter script COWStarter-debug.sh in the above mentioned folder. This way, a new, empty err.log will be generated.
Mac OS X
Please go to the Applications folder or wherever you installed the program icon "Catan-Onlinewelt". Click "Catan-Onlinewelt" with your right mouse key (or click it while holding down the Ctrl key) and select "Show package content."
Here you will find a program icon named "Catan-Onlinewelt Debug". When you start it, the err.log file will be generated in the same folder (an existing err.log will be deleted and replaced by an empty file).
During the respective program run in Windows, Linux, or Mac OS X, the err.log file will be filled with status and error messages. Please send the resulting file via e-mail to
