Game Play
There are the following changes to the rules of the Basic Game:
- No Event Cards can be bought.
-
In the Trojan War, each player supports either Mycenae or Troy, for which Special Victory Points are awarded.
-
The building of ships helps to obtain more Special Victory Points and trading advantages.
The Trojan War
The players represent tribes of Greece and Asia Minor. The cities of Mycenae and Troy are at war. Two players support Troy with donations of resources, the other two support Mycenae. Each player can tell by his/her coat of arms what city he/she is with. At the beginning of the game, a player doesn’t know who the ally is with whom he/she will support the same city. Only at the end of the game, the coats of arms of the other players are shown. The players are not allowed to reveal their affiliation.
Troy
Mycenae
A player who has Troy on his/her coat of arms donates ore or wool. A player bearing Mycenae on his/her coat of arms donates grain or lumber. The cities of Troy and Mycenae are symbolized by specific terrain hexes that depict the resources the cities are supported with.
A player who wants to donate 1, 2, or 3 resources clicks on the Donation button. A window opens; the resources one wants to donate can be moved to this window. Each time a player donates, he/she is awarded a Commerce Point (Mill symbol).
The Donation window informs about the total number of resources donated by all players. If at least 10 resources were donated, the “Evaluation window” opens. One by one, 7 donated resources are uncovered. Troy wins if more ore and/or wool were donated. If more grain and/or lumber were donated, Mycenae wins. Each battle won counts as one Victory Point for the respective supporter of the city (a city winning for the fifth time counts as 2 Victory Points). The battles won, and thus the Special Victory Points, are displayed in the Info windows.
Note: It is not mandatory for a player to donate the resources of the city he/she is supporting. He/she can also donate a neutral brick, or even a resource that supports the opposing city. This can make sense if the player is in dire need for a Commerce Point but doesn’t have a resource to support his/her assigned city with.
Building Ships
Each time a player donates 1-3 resources, he/she receives a Commerce Point (Mill). Building a ship costs 2 Commerce Points, one lumber, and one wool. A ship is placed in the center of a free sea hex and must border on a coastal settlement or a ship of one’s own. Every ship gives an advantage in terms of better trading possibilities or Victory Points:
First Ship
On his/her turn, a player can trade 3 resources of the same type for any other resource.
Second Ship
Once per turn, the player can trade one of his/her Resource Cards for one donated Resource Card. For this purpose, the Exchange icon is used.
Third Ship
The player receives two Special Victory Points.
Fourth Ship
The player chooses a resource and may trade two of these resources for any other one, as often as desired during his/her turn.
Fifth Ship
The player receives two Special Victory Points.
Sixth Ship
Once during his/her turn, the player may draw a resource from the donated cards. For this purpose, the “Take” icon is used.
Seventh Ship
The player receives two Special Victory Points.
After a player has built a ship, he/she moves the Seafaring People (also see: a “7” was rolled). As a special feature of this Scenario, the Seafaring People can also occupy the coastal fields. (See below)
Note: Only one ship can be placed on a sea hex. Not all players will be able to build their 7 ships because there are less sea hexes than the total number of ships of all players together. It is therefore recommended to establish a coastal settlement early on, build one’s first ship, and be careful that the fellow players don’t hinder the possibilities for spreading one’s own ships.
The Seafaring People: The player who rolls a “7” or has built a ship moves the Seafaring People to another sea hex or a terrain hex on the coast. If a sea hex is chosen that borders on a settlement or city (and not on a ship), the player may draw a resource from the settlement/city owner’s hand of cards. If an opposing ship is on the sea hex, the player may draw a Resource Card from the owner of this ship. In case a terrain hex is chosen, the resource production of this terrain is blocked, and the player may take a resource from a fellow player owning a settlement/city next to this terrain.
End of the Game: The game ends when a player reaches 15 Victory Points on his/her turn, or a city has won 5 battles (6 Victory Points). In the latter case, the player of the city with more Victory Points wins. In case of a tie, the total number of Commerce Points determines the winner (a ship is worth 2 Commerce Points).
