The board game “Hoity Toity” is a game from the year 1990 and has been published by the publishing house Alea/Ravensburger. The version for the Catan Online World has the same rules as the board game but a graphic design of its own, tailored to the Catan Online World.
What is it about?
As citizens of the Catan Online World, you rise to aristocratic circles whose members have nothing better to do but collecting rare objects of Catanian origin and exhibiting them in the Castles of Gold Creek, Robber’s Delight, or other cities of Catan. The best exhibitions are rewarded with a considerable gain in prestige, which we measure in Victory Points. The player having the most Victory Points at the end of the game wins.
The Game Begins!
Our Marker Stones are in the Assembly Hall, and whenever we have obtained Victory Points, these stones move on.
Each player starts with 4 Collector’s Items. When clicking on the switch button, the window with one’s own Collector’s Items appears.
At the beginning of each round, we have to determine a location: either the Auction House, where two Collector’s Items can be purchased at an auction, or the Castle, where we can exhibit our Collector’s Items.
The Auction House
After all players have determined a location, the respective Location symbol appears next to the characters. The players who have opted for the Auction House begin. These players are requested to click on a Check or a Thief. The selected action appears next to the characters only after all players have made their decision.
1. Check:
The player who used the biggest Check selects one of the two Collector’s Items of the Auction House. The players with smaller Checks don’t get a Collector’s Item, but they keep their Checks.
2. Thief:
A Thief steals the biggest Check. But: If 2 or more Thieves are used, all Thieves end up with nothing.
The Castle
Now it is the turn of the players who chose the Castle. They are requested to opt for one out of 3 possible actions, “Exhibition,” “Thief,” or “Detective.” How to assemble an exhibition is explained at the end of this introduction.
The Second Round
If only one player chooses the Auction House, he/she can buy a Collector’s Item without any competition and with his/her smallest Check. The other players are cavorting in the Castle and have either opted for “Exhibition,” “Thief,” or “Detective.”
1. The Exhibition
The player opting for Exhibition now assembles and presents it.
The city field with the most advanced Marker Stone at the beginning of the round determines the number of Victory Points a player obtains for his/her exhibition. The best exhibition gets the higher number of Victory Points, and the second best exhibition the lower number. If a player exhibits alone, he/she gets the higher number of Victory Points.
2. The Thief
A player who plays a Thief can steal one Collector’s Item from each exhibition.
In case several Thieves are played in the Castle, each Thief can steal an object from each exhibition. Here, the Thief with more professional experience (higher number) has the first choice.
3. The Detective
A Detective sends all Thieves used in the Castle to jail. Afterwards, the player who has played the Thief has one Thief less, and the player who played the Detective is rewarded with Victory Points.
The number of Victory Points corresponds to the placing of his/her Marker Stone. For example, if it occupies the 3rd place, the player can advance by 3 fields.
In case several Detectives are played and at least one Thief shows up in the Castle, all players who play Detectives obtain the number of Victory Points that correspond to their respective ranking positions in the game.
If a player’s exhibition includes more than 3 Collector’s Items, he/she can scroll through the Exhibition window and take a look at all the barter objects.
Important: The first round is finished only when all players have clicked on the “Close Exhibition” button.
End of the Game
When a player’s Marker Stone reaches the Round Table, the two best exhibitions are shown. The player with the best exhibition receives another 8 Victory Points and the player with the second best exhibition another 4. The player who afterwards has the most advanced Marker Stone wins.
Assembling an Exhibition
When a player who selected “Exhibition” in the Castle clicks on the switch button, a window with his/her Collector’s Items opens. A red frame appears when clicking on a Collector’s Item, and the object is selected.
A collection must consist of at least 3 Collector’s Items, and the letters of the objects have to form a sequence. For example, collections with the letter sequences AAA, ABC, or AAABCD are allowed. Sequences that have gaps, such as AACD or BBEF, are not allowed.
When a player has selected at least 3 Collector’s Items with a valid sequence, he/she confirms the exhibition with the green checkmark.
Attention: A player can only select the action “Exhibition” in the Castle if his/her Collector’s Items can be combined for an exhibition.
If you want to know the name of one of your Collector’s Items, click on the object with the right mouse key.
Information about the Cards of Fellow Players
The left number appearing below each player’s character informs about the number of Checks owned by this player, and the right number about his/her number of Collector’s Items. The number in the center indicates the number of Victory Points of this player, or by how many fields his/her Marker Stone has advanced so far on the City bar.
