Two mouse-button work-around on modern Mac laptops Print E-mail
Thursday, 22 February 2007

Modern Macs are shipped with the new "Mighty Mouse", which can be configured to act as a multi-button mouse (use System Configuration in the Mac menu).

Older Macs with a one-button mouse can not do this, of course. Unfortunately, the usual simulation of the secondary mouse click by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the mouse button doesn't work in the Catan Online World. Here we need not just a single right mouse click to shift the visible area but rather a drag operation with the right mouse button held down.

To achieve this, most Mac users need to use a mouse with two buttons that usually connects to the Mac computer via USB or BlueTooth without any trouble.

However, the latest MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops are equipped with a touch pad that facilitates various mouse functions when touched with two fingers. A click with two fingers corresponds to a secondary mouse click, i.e. a click with the right mouse button. Dragging two fingers over the touch pad corresponds to the use of the scroll wheel.

Moving the visible area in the COW by dragging with the right mouse button held down can be simulated as described below or as demonstrated in the video clip above:

  • Place two fingers simultaneously on your touch pad, e.g. index and middle finger.
  • Press the touch pad button with your thumb (this would represent a single click with the right mouse button).
  • Keep the touch pad button pressed with your thumb and take your index and middle finger off the pad.
  • Drag one finger (or two fingers) over the touch pad while still holding down the pad button.
  • At the end of the drag operation, release the touch pad button.
